Constable School is an award-winning school located in the southwestern most region of South Brunswick Township. It is home to approximately 600 students from pre-school through fifth grade, with the majority of students living within walking distance of the school. This helps to account for Constable's warm and inviting neighborhood school atmosphere.
Constable's Early Childhood Program (kindergarten through second grade) is noted for its sound and developmentally appropriate instructional practice. A strong literacy program is in place to ensure that the students become independent readers and writers. A visit to one of the school’s Kindergarten or first grade classrooms reveals a wide range of learning experiences that actively engage the students. The young learners' natural curiosity is viewed as a tremendous resource to the teacher as it often serves as the guiding force in planning instruction.
The Elementary Program (third through fifth grades) builds upon the foundation established in the students' earlier years at Constable. Students are engaged in a variety of learning experiences in the areas of mathematics, reading, science, social studies, world language, and writing. Students also have regular instruction in art, music and physical education. For students needing additional support in the areas of mathematics, reading, and/or writing, Constable has a strong Basic Skills program. The Media Center is filled with fiction, non-fiction and reference titles and offers Internet access to extend learning beyond the school’s walls. Field trip experiences enrich the classroom program and extend students’ learning. In all facets of the curricular program, students are challenged to be active listeners, critical thinkers, strategic problem solvers, questioners and effective communicators.
Although academic performance is the primary area of emphasis, our program is enriched by an array of extra-curricular opportunities. Students join the chorus, band, string ensemble and the Art Club. Others participate in the Odyssey of the Mind showcase, Peer Mediation, Safety Patrol and Student Council.
Through a collaborative initiative involving both faculty and parents, Constable enjoys a rich cultural arts program that broadens and enriches the students’ educational experience. A variety of performing artists, authors and illustrators, and program presenters are invited to Constable regularly to round out the curricular program.
Strong student citizenship initiatives and The Responsive Classroom Character Education program are in place at Constable School. The school recognizes that character and ethics are the bedrock of a school where students love to go and learn each day. Toward this end, the staff helps the students to become cooperative, assertive, responsible, and demonstrate empathy and self-control (CARES). Students are also taught strategies to handle conflict, a natural part of growing up, both reasonably and appropriately. These are the aims of the school’s citizenship and character education program.
Constable enjoys a particularly strong, positive relationship with its parent community and the community at large. The professionals at Constable expect excellence from their students as they do from themselves. It is this commitment to learning that underscores the success of Constable in its mission to educate its students for the 21st Century.
